Thanks for Suyu's warm welcome! As a new member of this community, I'm delighted to briefly introduce myself: I'm an academic and practitioner in the field of urban and environmental planning, with an interest in nature/resources/water conservation. I've lived and worked for 40+ years in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, a part of the arid US Southwest region, and on daily basis encountered/crossed challenges and news about drought, heatwaves, wildfires, flash floods and other climate issues in this region and beyond. With my Chinese ethnic origin, growup in Taiwan, and work & travel experiences in several parts of Asian, including serving as a faculty member in Saudi Arabia and China, I'm glad to be here to share and learn with all of you in this community.

I'm sharing an event to take place on December 4 & 5 --
Event Name: CIEDM Actions on Soil Biodiversity @ Arcadia Ecohome
Event Description: As a CIEDM conservation scientist and a member of the FAO Global Soil Partnership’s International Network on Soil Biodiversity (NETSOB) and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Soil Health Scholar, Dr. Edward Huang will lead a 2-day local grassroots event to support and take part in the global celebrations of both the 2025 Wildlife Conservation Day and World Soil Day, respectively, on December 4 and 5. The CIEDM actions include event registrations with both wildlifeday.org and FAO, an engagement of leave-the-leaves cleanup of the Arcadia Ecohome's micro-forest which is a Certified Wildlife Habitat and a Certified Pollinator Habitat, a gardening work to add up the forest floor’s sponge layer with organic matters so as to enrich the soil and its ecoservice capacities including enhancement as water, heat and carbon sinks, a bioblitz walk in the forest to observe and record our discoveries of critters, insects, worms, fungus & other creatures, and a social media campaign to raise public awareness of the WCD and WSD significances and messages.

    ¡Únete a nosotros en #CRIC23! 🌏

🤝 Compartiendo y escalando lecciones, innovaciones y alianzas

    .. ¡Y más!

Glad to share this important intervention by our Daniel Tsegai, whose guidance and expertise continue to shape our shared efforts on drought resilience.

In this FRANCE 24 interview (in French), he highlights the rising drought risks and the need for strong early-warning systems, collaborative action, and long-term resilience pathways that protect vulnerable communities.
A valuable contribution to the broader conversation we will be having here on the CLP platform.

As the UN climate talks wrap up, one message stands out sharply for Africa: the continent cannot build real climate resilience without securing its drylands. These are the regions where climate change, land degradation, and biodiversity loss meet, where water is scarce, soils are fragile, and ecosystems are under pressure.

But these same drylands also hold Africa’s biggest opportunity. When we restore land, we also strengthen climate adaptation; when we protect biodiversity, we stabilize food and water systems; when we manage water wisely, we reduce drought risks and support livelihoods. This is the true convergence of land, climate, and nature.

Across the Sahel, the Horn, and Southern Africa, communities are already proving what works; water harvesting, drought-resistant crops, smarter grazing systems, and early warning tools that help farmers stay ahead of shocks.

The lesson from this COP is clear:
If Africa adapts its drylands, Africa adapts.
And that is where the continent’s climate future will be won.

New insights on declining natural carbon sinks

A new study published in Nature highlights how climate change and land-use pressures are reducing the Earth’s ability to absorb CO₂. The findings show that natural land sinks are weakening, while tropical forests in Southeast Asia and South America are shifting from carbon sinks to carbon sources, a trend driven by warming, drought, and deforestation.

Understanding these changes is essential for effective climate and drought management strategies.

Join the conversation and explore how stronger land stewardship and climate-resilient practices can support global mitigation efforts.

The State of Global Water Resources Report, published annually by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), provides a comprehensive quantitative overview of global water resources, with a particular focus on hydrological variability and long-term trends. The report supports countries, decision-makers, and stakeholders in understanding the current condition of water resources, identifying emerging hotspots, and developing effective water management strategies.

The 2024 edition highlights that Central and Eastern Europe are experiencing significant hydrological imbalances. While certain areas recorded above-normal river flows, subsurface water storage remains below average. This combination increases the region’s vulnerability to both floods and droughts, driven by rising variability in the water cycle.

You can access the full report at the following link:
