Purpose and Objectives:
Climate change is directly contributing to humanitarian emergencies from heatwaves,
wildfires, floods, tropical storms and hurricanes and they are increasing in scale,
frequency and intensity. Research shows that 3.6 billion people already live in areas
highly susceptible to climate change. Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is
expected to cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths per year, from
undernutrition, malaria, diarrhea and heat stress alone. The Nationally Determined
Contributions (NDC) are at the heart of the Paris Agreement and the achievement of
its long-term goals. NDCs embody efforts by each country for reducing greenhouse
(GHG) emissions in support of the 2°C target and their priorities on climate
adaptation.
Mongolia ratified the Paris Agreement in 2016 and updated its NDC in 2019 with
increased ambition to reduce GHG emission from 14% to 22.7% by 2030, compared to
the projected emissions under a BAU scenario for 2010. To achieve this, Mongolia will
implement concrete measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change by improving
its climate change policies, institutional frameworks and governance, access to
climate finance, transparency of climate monitoring and reporting, and sectoral
capacities. The initial estimations of financing needs for the NDC implementation are
around $11.5 billion—$6.3 billion for mitigation and $5.2 billion for adaptation. A
knowledge and support technical assistance (TA) on Supporting Climate Policy Actions

relevant policies aligned with the updated NDC targets.
