August 2026 was the joint-warmest month ever recorded globally, while much of Central and Eastern Europe experienced persistent dryness, severe drought and exceptionally low river flows. Temperatures were well above average across France, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Romania and much of the Balkans, generally by 3–5°C.
A clear reminder of the growing need for stronger drought preparedness, regional cooperation and practical action across Central and Eastern Europe.
