IT-WATER: the future of water resources in Italy
CIMA Research Foundation
A recent report on the severe drought affecting Sicily and the ongoing water scarcity in central-northern European regions over the past two years has captured my attention. It highlights critical issues I’ve been closely following regarding drought and heatwaves on insular territories. These alarming events serve as urgent reminders that we must reassess our relationship with water. The current water crisis is not only an economic burden, impacting agriculture and industry, but it is also beginning to affect our daily lives, with public health and food security now at risk.
In this context, the UNCCD and its Community of Learning and Practice on Drought Management (CLP) offer valuable insights, knowledge, and practical experiences focused on combating desertification, land degradation, and drought. The CLP serves as a platform for sharing expertise and best practices, providing essential tools for addressing these urgent challenges effectively.
This article on -the future of water resources in Italy- by the CIMA Research Foundation brings critical perspectives on the challenges of water scarcity and land degradation, connecting them to broader global concerns. This is especially relevant as we approach the next COP16* in Riyadh, where such issues will take center stage. I encourage you to read this report for a deeper understanding of the situation and its far-reaching consequences, which are key to the ongoing global conversation on environmental sustainability.
